Training Plans

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, training has been modified to meet the smaller groups and social distance requirements. This has led to a slight change in the planning of sessions.

However, an overview of the groups and examples of the types of activities that take place can be found below:

Under - 11's (Ages 7-11)

Athletics is fun, so developing a love for sport is fundamental to the Under-11's group. Learning through play, and keeping our young athletes on the go is paramount to the session. Our U11's take part in a wide range of activities from running and jumping to throwing. Working in teams and as individuals to develop fine motor skills and have fun is the key to these sessions.

Under - 13's (Age 12-13)

Under 13's focus on a range of activities, with the opportunity to learn and develop skills in both track and field. Some of the session will introduce the fundamentals of athletics training: warm-ups, specific technique development, warm-down and recovery. All of this is done under the guise of learning through play. Our U13's join in with circuit style competitions on the field to activities like throwing bean bags, relay and balance coordination.

 

Sprint Group

Developing the skills to sprint effectively and efficiently is key to these sessions. Learning the art of sprinting from technical development of sprint style, developing a starting position, lane running and bend running are some of the elements developed with the coaching team.

 

Built within a structured session including warmup, technical development, stamina training and warm down and recovery will help the athlete to hone the skills required to become a more effective sprinter. For competing athletes the training sessions will also help the coach and athlete to work on technical elements to improve performance in the many competitions on offer over the season.

Middle Distance Group

Developing the stamina and speed to run middle distance events are at the heart of these sessions. The sessions will focus on lap running and developing stamina whilst the coaches will also help to develop technique need to allow for better pacing, attack and understanding of the art of middle distance running.

Built within a structured session including warmup, technical development, stamina and speed training, with warm down and recovery. The sessions will help the athlete to develop the skills required to become a more effective middle distance runner. For competing athletes the training sessions also help the coach and athlete to work on strategies to improve performance in the many competitions on offer over the season.

Field Event Group

Field events are technically difficult and the training sessions for Long Jump, Javelin and Shot Putt allow the athletes to both attempt a range of different field events whilst learning the right techniques required to be able to effectively undertake field events whilst reducing the risk of long term injury. Highly specialist coaching on the technique required ensures the athletes develop effectively and can participate at a wide range of competitions throughout the season.

The sessions consist of warmup, technical development, stamina and strength training as well as warm down and recovery.
